When prisoners are first sentenced to imprisonment, they will be sent to the first admission prison for one to two weeks and go through a process starting with a detailed search of all belongings and body, collection of biographic data and health examination. Then they will be assigned to a specific prison according to their offences. In any kind of prison, it is forbidden for prisoners to have personal belongings; everything is kept by the prison administration. They are only allowed to have the clothing they are wearing, if prisons lack prisoner’s uniforms. If they wear trousers, they will be cut to a knee length to make them look different to staff. All individual money will be deposited in a prison book from which one can draw approximately 7 US$ a day to buy daily living goods at a prison retail shop. Prisoners can ask their relatives to deposit money into their accounts. Data from social media and narrative studies showed that any other needs such as blankets will be sent in by their relatives. These goods will be searched in detail before entering the prison. As there was not enough support for basic needs of prisoners, most goods have to be bought with their own money. Poor prisoners who do not have relatives to support them will often lack basic items such as underwear, brassieres, toothbrushes and soap. In the past, relatives could provide certain items or the prisoner’s favorite dishes. However, after some relatives tried to hide amphetamine drugs in the food, they are now hardly allowed to send groceries in. Water for showers will be released at restricted times and is limited in amount which it may be left only 1-2 liters for prisoners who came late.
