We have previously investigated the interactions between an
K1 and a L subunit cloned from the jelly¢sh Cyanea capillata
[10]. The L-type calcium channel K1 subunit (cyCav1; previously
called CyCaK1) is modulated by the calcium channel L
subunit (cyL) in a manner that is consistent with interactions
between mammalian calcium channel subunits. When coexpressed
with cyCav1 in Xenopus oocytes, cyL increases
whole-cell current amplitude, shifts the current^voltage relationship
to more hyperpolarized potentials, and alters the kinetics
of current inactivation, actions that can be duplicated
by coexpression of the mammalian L2a subunit with cyCav1.
An additional component of the Cyanea K1-L interaction is
the ability of cyL to accelerate the recovery of the channel
from inactivation, a form of modulation that has not been
reported for mammalian channels. The present experiments
were designed to examine the e¡ects of di¡erent L subunits
on recovery of both cyCav1 and a mammalian K1 subunit, the
human R-type calcium channel Cav2.3 isoform (hCav2.3; previously
called K1E).
