The inlet and outlet fittings shall be designed to:
a) reduce short-circuiting of liquid between inlet and outlet;
b) allow clearance of any internal blockage; and
c) ensure that solids that form the scum layer do not flow through the outlet.
4.2.2 Dimensions
Minimum dimensions for fittings shall be as shown in Figure 1 which isbased onfittings
formed using a “T” shaped pipejunction for both inlet and outlet pipe, and a manufactured
baffle that is sealed on to the tank wall. As an alternative, direct outlet pipe shall be placed
inside the filter chamber.
4.3 Flow path
The minimum distance that the sewage travels betweenthe inlet and the outlet of the septic
chamber shall be 1 200 mm measured horizontally. This distance shall be measured between
the vertical centre pointsof the inlet and outlet fittingsor, if baffles are provided, from points
midway between the bafflesand the tank walls adjacent to the baffles.
4.4 Openings
4.4.1 Access openings
Access openings shall be located to allow access for desludging of the chamber(s), for
maintenance and shall not be less than 200 mm in dimension to allow the desludging
mechanism to reach all parts of the chambers.
4.4.2 Inspection openings
When an inspection opening is located over single chamber or compartment, it shall have a
minimum dimension of not less than 400 mm.
When an inspection opening is located over a chamber divider or a partition and provides
access to two chambers or compartments, it shall have a minimum dimension of not less than
600 mm, and the minimum dimension of the opening to either chamber with divider or
partition shall not be less than 300 mm.
4.4.3 Covers for openings
Covers for access openings and inspection openings shall:
a) provide a corrosion-resistant means for lifting;
