Reduction of m.c. and hence of attack by fungi can be achieved by drying (solar drying, mechanical driers and by the sun). Crop drying systems are discussed for maize and peanuts. Chemical treatment can prevent mould and bacterial activity on moist grains; specific inhibitors produced by UK and US companies are described. Fumigation techniques are also mentioned. A pedal-driven chemical applicator for newly harvested maize in Thailand consists of a hopper, spraying-mixing chamber, collecting chute, cam-plunger assembly, knapsack sprayer and frame. Operational details are given.
