Phase 3 — baseline (T1) observation (2 weeks)
Data on children’s behavior and classroom variables were collected over a 2-week
baseline period in FACET and control classrooms following Phase 2. The occurrence of
Goal Behavior 1 (goal for FOC child) was also observed for FOC, GEN, and TYP
children in FACET classrooms. Observation procedures are described in the Measurement
section.
Phase 4 — functional assessment (2 weeks)
Following baseline observations, each FACET team completed a functional assessment
for the FOC child, and recorded assessment information on the FACET Record Form. At
the conclusion of this phase, teams met with consultants to review data and derive
hypotheses about FOC children’s challenging behaviors.
Phase 5 — development of a comprehensive behavior support plan (1 week)
Once functional assessments were completed for FOC children, teams convened for a
third training session to focus on Step #3 (Develop a Comprehensive Behavior Support
Plan). Using the FACET Record Form, each team developed an intervention plan that
included (a) learning environment strategies, (b) response strategies, and (c) teaching and
self-control strategies. Teams followed a FACET Intervention Manual which included
scripted procedures for each type of intervention strategy. The Comprehensive Behavior
Support Plan (CBSP) specified roles for each team member to implement and monitor the
intervention.
Phase 6 — CBSP implementation I (5–6 weeks)
Teams implemented the CBSP for FOC children for 5–6 consecutive weeks. Near the
end of this phase, teams met with consultants to review progress-monitoring data, evaluate
children’s progress, and make revisions in the CBSP, as necessary. At this time, the team
also established a goal for the GEN child (Goal Behavior 2).
Phase 7 — implementation (T2) observations (2 weeks)
Using the same procedures as for baseline (T1), data on children’s behavior and
classroom variables were collected over a 2-week period in FACET classrooms only. Goal
Behavior 1 (FOC child goal) and Goal Behavior 2 (GEN child goal) were also observed
for all children.
Phase 8 — generalization and CBSP implementation II (6 weeks)
During 6 weeks following T2 observations, teams implemented the five-step procedure
independently for GEN children, i.e., with neither training nor consultative support from the authors. During this phase, implementation of the CBSP continued for FOC children
for another 6 weeks.
