Results
The final sample size was 337 subjects consisting of
161 (47%) males and 176 (53%) females, with a
mean age of 41.2 years. The mean BMI of the sample
was 29.1, which is considered as being overweight
(BMI: 25–29.9). The average subject
reported less than 7 hr of sleep (40.9%) and participated
in greater than 5 hr of sedentary activity per
day or 312.3 min (see Table 1).
Figure 1 shows the distribution of individuals
who reported an average of two through 12 hr of
sleep. The majority of subjects reported they slept
6–8 hr each night. However, there were 54 subjects
who reported getting less than 6 hr of sleep per
night.
The results of the Pearson r correlation coefficient
analysis revealed a significant inverse association
between sleep duration and WC, r(319) = .113,
p = .043. The same analysis was used with BMI and
did not show a statistical significance in relation to
duration of sleep, r(334) = .081, p = .138 (see
Table 2). A comparison of WC in centimeters to
hours of sleep is demonstrated in Figure 2.
