Yan Nawa was called Ban Thawai (Tavoy village) or Ban Khok Khwai (water buffalo village) due to a large concentration of Tavoy people who often brought water buffaloes to market for trade. Its southern part is bordered by the Chao Phraya River which means it is an easy access to the boat and ferry transportation. It has a number of housing villages and residential areas. The Chalerm Maha Nakhon expressway runs through this district.
