Clustering the focal tree plots in three groups provided the mostinformative number of clusters,
with a reasonable separation between groups (MRPP T = 7.89) and a high level of homogeneity within groups (MRPP A = 0.13). Three tree communities were identified, containing between 17 and 31 tree species (Table 1): mixed deciduous forest and two phases of the deciduous dipterocarp forest. Only the dry phase of the deciduous dipterocarp forest community had significant indicator species, but the indicator species (the dominant dipterocarps) were not exclusive to this community (Fig. 2).
