Among other things, Mooney points out a variety of ways in which capital penetrates agriculture. As Mooney highlights, the family farm-capitalist farm dichotomy is a tremendously oversimplified lens through which to understand exploitation in agriculture. More problematic still, as illustrated in Figure 2.5 Mooney shows just how difficult it is to place those involved in agriculture in the pure class locations of"proletariat,' "capitalist,' and"petty bourgeoisie" (the latter category being where Marxist thought typically locates the family farm).
