Sukhothai was the first capital of Thailand which was founded in 1238 by two Thai chieftains.
The name sukhothai means Dawn of happiness as the era was referred to as Thailand's golden age lasting 200 years
During the reign of king Ramkamhaeng sukhothai prospered in terms of military skills arts culture literature and religion the evidences are the invention of the Thai alphabet and the announcement of Buddhism as the national religion
However the kingdom's gentle rule and religious focus led to its gradual decline and it became a part of the kingdom of Ayutthaya in the 15th century
