Parental income is related to adolescent behavioural outcomes following parental divorce
(e.g., Leon 2003). As
it is difficult to question adolescents about the income of
their parents, a subjective measure of the financial situation
was used. Respondents were asked how often their parents
experienced difficulties with making ends meet. The scale
for this variable ranged from 1 = never to 4 = always. For
children of divorced parents, this variable was assessed
separately for the mother and father, and the measure of the
residential parent was used in the analyses. In case of joint
physical custody, the mean of the paternal and maternal
score was used. Three categories were constructed: never
or seldom financial difficulties (71.3 %), sometimes or
often financial difficulties (17.9 %) and a category for
respondents with a missing value on this item (10.8 %). We
included this last category in the analysis in order to not
lose these respondents.
