A 16 to 19 g. through-the-needle intravenous catheter is used. Fluid is collected in a Lukens specimen container (Sherwood Medical Products, St. Louis, Mo.) that is attached to the free end of the IV catheter using a male catheter plug or similar adaptor. Sterile saline or a multiple electrolyte solution is infused through the catheter and subsequently retrieved. Mechanical suction is very helpful in retrieving the airway samples. Instruments from a minor or soft tissue surgical pack are used to attach and detach the various tubing and collection components. For cats, a small-sized sterile endotracheal tube is also used.
