Fill a seed tray with seed starter soil four to six weeks before you plant the vegetable garden. Spread the marigold seeds out on top of the soil and lightly cover the seeds. Keep the seeds moist and warm while they germinate, which will take a couple of weeks.

Fill a flat container that is deeper than the seed tray with potting soil. Carefully separate the marigold seedlings when they are at least 2 inches tall. With a spoon, dig small holes in the soil the same size as the seedling roots. Plant the marigolds in the holes and gently firm soil around the plants. Keep the soil moist and place the container in an area with direct sunlight.
