Under the environmental conditions of this experiment varying stocking densities between
0.35 and O-50 m2 per 100 kg pig had relatively little effect on blood profile or meat quality
for commercial transports below about 3 hr journey time. The main source of variation
was day of transport within stocking density.
Pig behaviour during transport was affected by stocking density but pigs did not in
general lie down with more space on the vehicle. On the contrary there were indications
that there was a risk of increased skin damage due to trampling and/or fighting when
more space than 0.35 m2 was given during transport.
