Traditional historical sources such as the Babad Tanah Jawi claim that Majapahit feii in a great final buttle against the Muslim forces of Demak in 1478, when the last ruler, mythologized as Brahwijaya VII, vanished. According to other sources, however, the kingdom continued to exist in a much reduced state unitl it finally aisappeared in the early 16th century. The last inscription of the kingdom was carved in 1486 by the ruler Girindrawardhana Dyah Ranawijaya. Pigafetta, who recorded Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage around the world, indicated that a Javanese kingdom calling itself Majapahit still existed in 1522.
