Sometimes the best help we can offer is to guide patients in establishing their own motivation. This may entail offering supportive information followed by a temporal space to reflect on the information provided and on the day-to-day communication difficulties that are experienced. Instruction on "journaling" or the use of a short-term "Hearing Diary" followed by a repeat appointment a month or two later can be helpful here. Enrollment in a Hearing Help Class as presented in Chapter 7 can also be helpful by exposing those wide low motivation to enthusiastic peers who have moved forward wide audiologic recommendations. Satisfied consumers may agree to be resources for parents wide lingering doubts or questions. Their endorsement to the value of amplification, with the acknowledged "costs" of adjustment as "worth it," may help many patients who want to make informed decisions.
