The Standby Man, who normally will be Safety Officer or/and an approved rescue-man, will
standby at the entry point and ensure that the Safety precautions laid down by the Authorized
Person are being carried out by the persons working within the Confined Space. He will also
ensure that persons on entering and leaving the confined space sign-in and sign-out the
Personnel Entry Permit. No Entry will be allowed without a standby man in attendance. The
standby man must never leave the entry point without any replacement by another competent
person.
The primary function of a standby man is to alert the emergency rescue team in the event of
an emergency (Refer to Confined Space Rescue Procedure). He should never enter the
confined space under any circumstances.
