Operative fixation, however, is not without complications; among these are incisional numbness, infection, and implant prominence necessitating a second surgical procedure for removal. In a 2012 systematic review analyzed eleven studies of clavicle plate fixation and found that implant-related complications occurred in 9% to 64% of patients28. In adult patients, that risk may be offset by the benefits of restoring anatomy, but the burden of proof re- mains to consistently replicate those findings in an adolescent population.
