industry.Technological advances promise to expand the ability of city dwellers to plant and harvest crops on rooftops. According to William H. Roley, Jr., of the Permaculture Institute of Southern California, “edible landscapers” are already producing crops on roofs, balconies, decks, and walls. In addition to saving money, city farmers help improve urban air quality, provide jobs for local residents, and reduce the congestion and pollution caused by trucks bringing food into the city. New technologies that will improve urban farming are briefly discussed.
