needed are chisels and hammer or smaller hand chisels called burins or gravers that are pushed, and a method of fixing the metal to be engraved firmly to base that is heavy enough to stay still and yet can be easily rotated or turned when necessary. Traditional engraving by burin continues to be practiced by goldsmiths, gunsmiths and printers to produce beautiful, crisp and intricately engraved designs. There is a long learning curve to learning to engrave and modern techniques using lasers, engraving machings, acid etching and even hand stamping are used when cost is more import than quality, and beautiful details, crisp lines and rolling reflections of light are considered unnecessary.
