A concept that is likely to grow in use in the years to come is the integrated harnessing and utilization of different forms of renewable energy sources by employing an IRES. The inherent diversity between insolation and wind, smoothed by the addition of biomass, hydro and different forms of energy storage, can be effectively employed to satisfy a variety of energy and other needs. A few prototype installations have been established in different parts of the world [52], [53]. They go by names such as “Village
Energy Center” or “Global Energy Village”. PV will play a significant role in such installations. As the cost of PV comes down, its role will expand also. A related approach is to establish island or multi-island energy systems that include PV, fuel cells, diesel-electric plants, and some forms of energy storage.
