Obese exercisers may require accommodations for arthritic conditions, and modifications of weight-bearing activities may be necessary. Because of this increased orthopedic risk, intensity may necessarily be sacrificed for safety, and progression should be gradual. Obese individuals are also at increased risk for hyperthermia, and the exercise environment should be appropriately adapted.5,7 Additional attention must be paid to comorbid diseases and to medications such as those that may affect vision, sensation, heart rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels.
