Following the interview with Jerry I talked for some time with the teacher who had indicated the most concern and willingness to help Jerry improve his behavior. I asked her to try to ignore Jerry when he was late or lacking materials and to make positive remarks when he did arrive before the bell with necessary materials. As this was Jerry's first class each morning, the teacher suggested that when he arrived wearing an unusual hat she would ask him quietly as he entered to place it on her desk and pick it up at the end of the day. No other references would be made to the hat. Occasional positive remarks as to his appearance could be made on those days his head was unadorned.
