2001–2008. UTI was defined on entry as fever and/or local
urinary tract symptoms (dysuria, abdominal/back pain, strongsmelling
urine, enuresis) and growth of a single bacterial strain
of $105 colony-forming units (CFUs) per milliliter in a midstream
urine sample or a sample taken with a urine bag or
catheter, or any growth in a suprapubic bladder aspirate sample,
according to the practices of the centers participating in the
