Data collection and analysis
Semi-structured interviews were completed at the child’s
bedside or in a private consultation room. The semistructured
interviews (see Table 2) consisted of three broad
domains, including: (1) Chronic Asthma Care Strategies;
(2) Coordination of Care Across the Healthcare Continuum
and (3) Asthma Education Needs and Resource
Exploration. Field notes and memos taken during the
interviews were also considered data. Six parents were
interviewed in groups of two. The other 14 parents were
interviewed individually. Interviews were digitally
recorded and lasted between 20 to 77 minutes. Follow-up
phone calls were completed to clarify previous interviews
and obtain additional information relevant to the scope of
this project with permission from the parent for contact
obtained at the time of the interview.
Data analysis through phenomenology offers an
approach in investigating the complex world of human
experience and accommodated non-empirical data such as
values, beliefs and feelings. Van Manen’s
phenomenological method was selected to guide our data
analysis, which calls for reflection and entails two
approaches to the data [14]. The first is the holistic
