Results from the interviews indicate that pesticide application has a negative impact on biodiversity as they affect both target and non-target organisms. In Sierra Leone where the use of pesticides is largely uncontrolled, the exposure concentrations at which this occurs is high. The methods of application are likely to lead to the pollution of adjacent
water bodies and their continuous use is likely to result in accumulation in soil and sediments, some of which could be transported to other areas by erosion especially during the rainy season when the adjacent water bodies flood their plains. Comparing these findings to previous research, there is an indication that the uncontrolled use of pesticides is likely to be having negative effects on the environment (van der Werf, 1996; Stark and Banks, 2003; Desneux et al., 2007; van Dyk and Pletschke, 2011; Pingali and Roger, 2012).
