increased at the beginning of several weeks, then decreased at last.
On the fourth week, the water consumption of these four groups
was less approximately 10 ml/d than that of the control group.
As shown in Table 1, the food intake of control group increased
faster than that of Group I. The positive control group had 15.7 g/d
of food intake at the fourth week, which was lower than the
control group. After administering the POCS, the food intake of
streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were even higher than the
control group, especially at the third and fourth week (Table 1).
As shown by the experiment, Group I showed the body weight up
continued to rise while the Group II showed an opposite trend.
The body weight of Group I increased regularly from 32.3 ± 1.7 g to
41.6 ± 2.3 g during the term of four weeks. Control group showed
a slight decrease in body weight from 32.6 ± 1.1 g to 26.4 ± 2.2 g.
The positive control group, receiving 600 mg/kg body weight of
dimethylbiguanide, was determined to maintain constant body
weight compared to the initial value (32.2 ± 1.9 g) with that of the
fourth week (31.3 ± 3.4 g). Comparing data of Groups IV, V and VI,
no significant (P < 0.05) difference was found between them. The
difference between Group II and Group I was found extremely significant
(P < 0.01). Comparing data of Groups III, IV, V and VI with
Group I, it is significant (P < 0.05) difference was found between
them.
