of infection in the wound, how to prepare the wound bed
and to select an appropriate antimicrobial dressing. A range
of antimicrobial dressings, such as those containing silver,
iodine, PHMB (polyhexamethylene biguanide) and DACC
(dialkylcarbamoylchloride), were available for delegates to
inspect during the session. Delegates were also asked to factor
in the importance of wound cleansing in the prevention and
treatment of localised infection; for example, to demonstrate
the use of an irrigation solution, such as Octenilin (Schülke),
in the removal of slough and necrotic tissue and the
promotion of healing.
Each zone’s educational sessions were repeated four to
five times throughout the day, presenting health professionals
with step-by-step learning of evidence-based management.
