As
the HHW quantities generated are small, with certain exceptions as
WEEE, it is not financially sustainable to introduce a large-scale
separation policy, while households practically cannot be considered
hazardous waste producers. In legislation the term used to
refer to hazardous waste generated in households at municipal
level is not clearly defined in European Union (EU) legislation,
while there is no specific regulation specifying the management of
such waste. Nevertheless, there are national initiatives for separate
collection schemes of HHW in some EU Member States since ‘90s
and US since ‘80's
