The supplier environmental focus dimension captures
the degree to which the firms seek environmentally
conscious suppliers. Research indicates that socially
responsible firms ensure that supplier processes and
products are environmentally sound (Carter & Jennings,
2002a). The supplier ethical treatment dimension
assesses firms’ level of honesty/ethical behavior during
the supplier selection process. Unethical behaviors
would include lying, misleading, or blaming suppliers’
representatives for mistakes that were not their fault,
to name a few (Carter & Jennings, 2002b). The supplier
diversity focus dimension captures the extent to
which the firms select suppliers belonging to gender
or ethnic minority groups. Sourcing from minorityowned
suppliers plays a key role in strengthening the
economic outlook of minority communities (Carter,
Auskalnis and Ketchum 1999). The supplier human
rights focus dimension represents the degree to which
firms actively seek suppliers that emphasize human
social issues during normal operations. As supply
chains become more globalized, interest in human
rights and ethical treatment issues for workers at overseas
supplier locations is growing (Culpan & Guglielmo,
2010). The supplier safety focus dimension
captures the emphasis firms place on potential suppliers’
safety-related behaviors in supply chain workspaces
during selection. The significant increase in the
number of industrial accidents (Yuan, Rong, & Ying,
2010) and work-related injuries (Yu et al., 2012) in
countries such as China highlights the need for careful
scrutiny of the potential suppliers’ safety conditions
and standards. The community focus dimension assesses
the extent to which firms account, during the selectionprocess, for the impact of their supplier choice on the
broader community. Firms can positively impact the
local community by selecting and supporting local
suppliers when possible (Carter & Jennings, 2002a).
