Once upon a time there was a fisherman called Setthi, who had two wives. His major wife was Nang Kanittha, who had a daughter named Uyai. His minor wife was Nang Kanitthi, who had two daughters called Aai and Ie. Setthi loved his minor wife more than his major wife and he always rebuked her. Uyai was usually punished by her step - mother and two sisters when her parents weren't at home.
One day he and Nang Kanittha went fishing early. His wife rowed a boat and he cast a net. Unfortunately, they couldn't catch any fish. Later, he found a golden fish called Pla Boo Thong. He wanted to throw it into the water, but his wife asked him to bring it back. He got angry with his wife because he was tired and hungry. He hit his wife and pushed her into the river. Then he went back home without any fish. When he arrived home, Uyai ask him where her mother was. He didn't answer. Uyai kept asking many times. She knew that her mother had an accident. She tormented the loss of her mother. Nang Kanitthi is afraid that villagers might hear and know the fact, so she and her husband hurt Uyai very hard. They told the villagers that they wanted Uyai to follow her mother because she left with her adulterer with some belongings. Uyai thought her mother had died.
The next morning, Setthi and his wife woke Uyai and told her to do the housework in spite that she was injured. She had to feed chickens and ducks, clean the house and etc. Aai and Ie didn't do any thing.
Nang Kanittha was born to be a golden fish called Pla Boo Thong because her mind was on the golden fish before she died. She was worried about her daughter. She always swam around her house and tried to show her daughter that she was her mother.
One day, while Uyai was sitting at the pier, she looked at the water and found a fish with beautiful golden scales. The fish swam towards Uyai and talked about her fate from her cruel husband. When Uyai knew that the fish was her mother, she felt upset and cried.
Nang Aui saw them and told her mother. The next day Nang Kanitthi asked Nang Uyai to take their cows to the fields. Aai went to the pier and called the fish like Uyai did. When the fish showed up, she caught and killed it for food. But one of Uyai's ducks kept a scale in its mouth to show it to Uyai.
The next day she buried it in the forest and prayed that her mother would be two eggplant trees. The god pitied Uyai. She was so grateful that the god inspired her to get the things she wants. Uyai respected the trees every day. Later, her mean step - mother knew the story. She asked Aai to follow Uyai into the forest and pulled out the trees and collected the eggplants when Uyai was careless. At last, Nang Aai could manage the trees.
The same duck kept one of eggplants and told Uyai the story. She wrapped an eggplant and took it with her when she took care of the cows in the field. Then she buried it in the forest and prayed that it would be a golden Pho tree and a silver Pho tree which the god inspired that again.
One day Thao Phommathat traveled in the forest and found the beautiful golden and silver Pho trees. Then he knew that they belonged to Uyai. The soldiers took her to the palace. When the king met her, he was satisfied with her beauty. Uyai told him her stories. He pitied Uyai. He thought to take her back to the palace and appointed her as a queen. Then he asked for the trees. She agreed to give him the trees. He asked Uyai to pull them by herself. Then she respected to the trees. Finally, she could pull them out easily. The king was surprised and he thought that Uyai should be his wife.
When Nang Kanitthi and her daughter realized that Thao Phommathat appointed Uyai as the queen. They were jealous and tried to kill her. She wanted her daughter to be the queen instead of Uyai. They told her that her father was really sick. He might die very soon. Uyai hurried to go back home with her attendants. When she arrived at her house, only Uyai to get into the house.
As soon as she stepped into the house, she fell into a big pan with boiling water and died immediately.
After Uyai had died, Nang Kanitthi and the elderly Kalisad helped Aai to put on Uyai's clothes. Then she returned to the palace without any suspect. When she arrived at the palace, she pretended that she was sick and she wanted to be alone in her room. Thao Phommathat was crazy about her because of Kalisad's magic. He visited her with no doubt. However, he was sad and astonished when the trees became limp. He didn't know why and what to do.
Uyai was born again to be a red-breasted parakeet, but her mind was still hers. She was always concerned about her husband and the trees(her mother). She flew to the Pho trees. She cried and complained about her husband. Thao Phommathat heard her complaints. He was surprised why the bird complained him. He asked her and realized that she was his wife. He felt very disappointed, but he didn't know how to do with Aai because he was controlled by love potion. He kept her in a golden cage, close to himself and he often talked to her.
One day his royal attendants told the king that white elephants were found in the north, so he decided to round up elephants by himself.
Aai realized that the bird was her sister, Uyai. When the king was away, she got a chance to get rid of her. She caught it, cut its wings and pulled its features. She asked the cook to kill it and cooked curry for her. The bird was injured so it pretended that it was dead. The cook thought it died and left it in the kitchen and intended to cook it for dinner. The bird toiled to live with a mouse. When the cook came back, she was shocked when she couldn't find the bird. He took it to the forest. The bird toiled in the forest until it arrived at a hermit's hermitage. The hermit saw an ugly and poor bird. He made her by magic to be a beautiful woman. He took care of her as his daughter, Uyai also took care of the hermit.
When he arrived at the hermitage, he met Uyai. She was very happy to see her husband again. However, both of them felt sad when they realized that Lom would become a picture on a piece of paper in three days.
After that, the king took his wife back to the palace. He hold a grand festival for 7 days. After the grand festival, he judged everyone who hurt his wife starting from the cook. She laid the blame to Aai. Uyai asked him to give them a pardon. Aai was guilty and concerned, so she decided to commit suicide.
The king wanted to punish her parents, so he asked the cook to make curry with Aai's flesh and sent it to her parents. As soon as they saw the curry, they were unconscious. Ie, the youngest daughter, was so shocked that she became dumb. The elderly Kalisad died of heart failure before being punished. Setthi and Nang Kanitthi repented and surrendered with her daughter, Ie. Uyai asked for their forgiveness. The king agreed with her and he let her to take care of Ie because he thought that she was punished by the nature. Setthi and his wife fed birds and fish in the garden behind the royal palace. Since then both of them became kind and generous, especially to red-breasted parakeet and Pla Boo.
The king and the queen reigned and ruled the people happily.
