The early development of geometric concepts is based on the images students create, thus
it is critical to examine the way these images are formed and used. It appears that in order to
better understand and assist young students with the development of spatial concepts, there is
a need for further investigation of students' understanding of the properties of threedimensional
shapes. If it can be ascertained what students choose to focus on when analysing
shapes, then teaching programs can be developed to improve students' attention to critical
aspects.
