It is the ship's first voyage. This floating palace is bound for New York City. The crew intends to set a record getting there. That doesn't seem to be a problem. The Titanic is the most powerful ship on the sea, brags its builder. There is nothing to fear. Let other ships' crews worry about iceberg warnings. Other ships aren't the Titanic. The Titanic is unsinkable. Sadly, pride goes before the fall. Around midnight, on April 14, 1912, a massive iceberg rips open the migty ship's steek hull. Tons of water gush in. For the Titanic, the end has come. Most of the ship's 2,224 passengers are not rich or famous. They are crowded in tiny cabins on the lower decks. These lower decks quickly fill with water. People scramble to the lifeboats. But there aren't enough lifeboats for everyone. Only 722 passengers are able to get into lifeboats and survive. Over 1,500 people drown or freeze to death in the water that night. Other ships come to help. But they arrive too late. The Titanic's tragic story still fascinates people today. In 1985, Robert Ballard discovered the wreck's location on the ocean floor. Other enplorers have sent remote-controlled subs to the shipwreck. They have retrieved thousands of objects, including crystal bottles, bronze statues, jewelry, and love letters. These treasures speak of what was lost when the unsinkable Titanic went down.
