In 1998 Canberra International Airport Pty Limited, a Canberra-based family business, purchased the lease of the aviation facilities and land and infrastructure known as the Canberra Airport, including these development rights. In the same way as other bidders and stakeholders in the sale process, the company was highly conscious of the rights and obligations associated with ownership of the Airport, and, accordingly, it has endeavoured to maximise both the aviation and non-aviation potential of the Airport in accordance with its original proposal to the Commonwealth. This scope of development activity underpinned bids to the Commonwealth and was confirmed with the approval of the 1999 Master Plan.
