Lambda comes in both symmetric and asymmetric versions. The symmetric version is used when there is no reason to suspect that one of the variables is dependent on the other. It is actually calculated as a weighted average of the two asymmetric version. It this example the symmetric value of 0.71429 falls somewhere in between the two asymmetric value. The asymmetric version will have two possible values, according to which of the two variables is suspected of being dependent. SPSS calculates all Three possible values for lambda, from which we choose the one appropriate to the research question. In this example we believe that height is the dependent variable, so we refer to the following portion of the out put.
