The entire Washington, D.C., subway system will be closed for at least 29 hours starting midnight on Tuesday to "inspect electrical components on the tracks." The emergency inspection was prompted at least in part by a fire on the tracks Monday, which caused major delays throughout the system.
The Associated Press reported Monday's fire was caused by the same kind of electrical component that malfunctioned last year, causing a train to fill with smoke, killing one passenger and sickening dozens.
