The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) is a key part of the regulatory reforms of the Council
of Australian Governments (COAG) to deliver a seamless national economy. The ACL
replaces provisions spread across 20 State and Territory Acts and in the Trade Practices
Act 1974 (TPA).
The ACL is the culmination of a process of cooperation between the Australian Government
and the States and Territories through the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs (MCCA).
It draws on the conclusions of the 2008 Productivity Commission (PC) Review of Australia’s
consumer policy framework and best practice in existing State and Territory laws, and the
consultations that have been undertaken over the past two years.
