The Lower Class consisted of farmers and slaves. The farmers of the Lower Class were forced to give at least two thirds of their crops to the Upper Class. The men wore plain cotton underclothes and plain white clothes on top. Women wore loose-fitting dresses and skirts that had some very simple embroidery. They wore their hair long and neatly combed. Out of all the Maya, the slaves were the poorest. They also had the hardest lives. Some people were born into slavery, and others became slaves later in their lives. They worked in their owner's house for their entire life. One thing they did was haul stone from the nearby quarries. If an owner died before their slave did, the slave was often killed and buried with the owner. They were thought to serve them in the afterlife. Briefly, the Lower Class Maya lived a very difficult life of farming for, and serving the Upper Class.
