Abstract In this chapter, we address the perspectives on design, concept gener- ation, and creativity. First, we overview the previous research on concept generation, which is at the very early stage of design, by focusing on interdisci- plinarity and creativity. Next, we classify concept generation into two phases—the problem–driven phase and inner sense–driven phase—according to the following two factors: the basis of concept generation and ability which enables the concept generation to proceed. Further, we define concept generation and creativity as follows: concept generation is the process of composing a desirable concept towards the future, and design creativity is the degree to which an ideal is conceptualized.
