In all examined species the small intestine was separated from the large intestine by a muscular sphincter named by
PORTER (1972), RAINEY (1981) and WYNEKEN (2001) as the ileocecal valve. However, in D. coriacea a small lateral pouch was observed, extending from the large intestine wall near the valve. The finding was also observed in this species by RAINEY (1981), which he called the cecum. But a specific function was not given for this structure and therefore more studies are needed, including histological analysis.
