When Campylobacter is detected in raw milk, it is thought to originate from various environmental sources including indoor cow housing ( Ellis-Iversen et al., 2009). In New Zealand, dairy cattle are predominantly grass fed in open fields year round. Therefore, the low prevalence of Campylobacter in raw milk in this study is not unexpected and is in agreement with another publication which indicated that Campylobacter is usually detected in only a small percentage of raw milk samples in New Zealand ( Hudson et al., 1999).
