Throughout history, society has provided for the poor, sick, and homeless. Usually run by agencies with a religious background, missions have grown to include social service and law enforcement agencies. Even in today's economic climate, some people do not possess the means to provide shelter for themselves. Missions include communal sleeping quarters, dining facilities, and bathing facilities. Few have beds; most supply cots. Frequently, especially in inclement weather, the only space available is on the floor. Some missions also provide medical attention and counseling services.
