Once it has been pointed out, it is obvious that the environment is not only a problem
domain for an organism, especially if the organism is an enculturated human
being. Our environment often provides important resources for solving problems.
I bring this into view using Kirsh and Maglio’s (1994) distinction between pragmatic
and epistemic actions. A pragmatic action is performed by the agent to bring
her physically closer to a goal state, but an epistemic action is performed by the
agent to change her environment in such a way that she gets exposed to new information
input. In purely physical terms, the action might take the agent further from
