The proportion of children who had consulted a dentist by 4 years of age was 31.2% (97 ⁄ 141) in the intervention group and 34.2% (68 ⁄ 199) among controls (P = 0.57). Additionally, only 16 children had filled teeth (filled teeth ‡ 1). Of these, 8 ⁄ 141
(5.7%) were in the intervention group and 8 ⁄ 199 (4.0%) were in the control group (P = 0.48). The mean number of teeth at assessment was 20.0 in the intervention group and 19.9 in the control group.
