Yield components stalk number, stalk height, stalk diame- ter, stalk weight, as well as productivity were recorded on each individual plot in plant cane and ratoon crop. Stalk number (SN) was counted in 1 m of the row plot. A random sample of 10 stalks was used to measure stalk length, stalk diameter and stalk weight. Stalk length (SL) was measured from the first visible dewlap leaf to the stalk base while stalk diameter (SD) was recorded at one third of the stalk height (from the basis to the top). For stalk weight (SW), ten stalks were weighted and the mean weight was obtained.
The quality measures (Brix, Pol%Cane and Fiber%) were carried out in a sample of 10 stalks harvest from each clone at plant cane and ratoon crop, according to the methods described in Consecana (2006) guide. Due to the costs of the quality analysis only two blocks were evalu- ated. Brix refers to the estimate of total dissolved solids in juice while Pol%Cane is defined as the quantity of sucrose weight in 100 ml of solution and Fiber% refers to the insoluble mater in water that is present in the stalk.
