When designing an appropriate technique to clone a particular coral species, it is important to make a distinction
between fragmentation for mariculture orex situculture in
aquaria and between use of fragments for reef restoration
(reviewed by Rinkevich 2005; Edwards & Gomez 2007), for
ornamental aquaria (e.g. Leewiset al.2009) or for drug discovery and development (Lealet al.2013a). The following
important aspects of asexual propagation are hereby taken
into consideration: condition of the mother colony, fragment size, type and orientation, and substratum for fragment attachment.
