here are other health risks on campus, such as unhealthy fried foods, soft drinks and air pollution from construction in the quad. Obesity is an epidemic in this country: what is the rationale for protecting students from second hand smoke, but not from Pepsi, served daily?
People have the choice to abstain from soft drinks, but it is difficult to avoid a smoker huddled next to a door on a rainy day. Why not just proactively enforce the current smoking regulations and protect students that way?
A total ban is excessive. When Montgomery College banned smoking even in designated areas outdoors, smokers made a mass exodus to areas which were never intended to be used for gatherings, and caused a litter problem so large that a new fence was put up closing up a neighborhood pedestrian path. Smokers evading the ban would hide around corners, and were not visible to people with breathing problems.
