As a result of such factors, deconditioning rapidly occurs in older adults when hospitalized.10 and 14 Deconditioning describes the physiological changes, such as decreased muscle mass, that result from aging and/or immobility and contributes to overall weakness.10 This phenomenon occurs for some as early as the second day of hospitalization.14 Many patients never regain preadmission functional status after deconditioning occurs.15 As a result, these individuals require greater assistance after discharge and may be unable to return home.
The costs of care are much higher for geriatric patients than for their younger counterparts.1, 4, 16 and 17 These costs are related to a higher acuity, longer lengths of stay, more complications, more documented adverse health events, and the use of larger amounts of health care supplies and resources.1, 4 and 16
