Some of the exercises are not engaging for the simple reason of the unappealing layout. Uninteresting activities such as drills can be made interesting by the use of visuals and vivid layout both in presentation and practice so that students will enjoy learning. Sheldon makes the point that, ‘Textbooks are physical artefacts, and the author needs to recognise that layout, format, typography and graphics are also essential for a successful course book.‘ (1987:8) This is too important a point to be missed if we are taking learning needs into account.
