Previous studies in athletes have not found the decrease in body weight that this population experienced but have noted changes in body composition. The 1.4 kg (1.6%) loss of lean mass in this population is comparable with the seasonal decrease of 1.2 kg (1.5%) that Harley et al. (10) found in elite rugby players but almost twice the 0.8% loss of lean mass seen in distance runners (6). Contrary to losses in lean mass, Division I men’s soccer players implementing a specific training program during the competitive season experienced a 0.9-kg gain in lean mass and a 1.5-kg increase in body mass (17).
